For the most part I love being an expat. I love the travel and adventures. I love learning about new cultures and exposing our children to experiences which hopefully broaden their world views and open their hearts and minds. But the most difficult part about being an expat is that it can be awfully lonesome. We miss our friends and families painfully so at times and find that farewells are getting harder and harder as time goes on. Abu Dhabi is a unique and rewarding place to live, but we also know that it is largely a transient community. There are so many wonderful aspects to living in the Middle East, but it is also a challenging environment for most expats and so as a result, we have to say goodbye to the friends we are making along the way.
Today Maddie's best little buddies are leaving Abu Dhabi and before everyone spread out for the summer we hosted a little Arabian Nights farewell party, sending them off into their Whole New World on their magic carpet.
I decorated our living room to resemble the Sheik Zayed Grand Mosque and had hints and touches of Princess Jasmine and Aladdin.
The girls decorated magic carpet cookies and ate sweet potato stars, magic carpet pizzas and had date and honey milkshakes to drink.
They played and danced to the tune of "A whole new world" and then designed gold jewelled cuff bracelets to match their Princess Jasmine headbands.
How lucky our kids are that they are going to have lifelong adventures catching up with their global friends and laughing about all the silly things their mums made them do together as children!
Z&S, We will miss you more than words can say, but we look forward to continuing our friendship and Crafternoon sessions across the Indian Ocean! xx
