I wish I was far more casual and less emotional than I am.
But when I cross a border into a new country, I get as excited as a kitten chasing a leaky cow!!
It has to be the "Australia-factor" at play, I'm sure of it. Our anthem says it all, we are "girt by sea". To get to a new country we have to fly for 4 hours, and that just gets us across the Tasman to New Zealand. We've driven half way up the east coast of Australia, from Melbourne to Brisbane, and it took 25 hours of driving. In that time we only crossed two state borders, but both times, it felt significant.
Fast forward five years and us little Aussies driving through Europe is still so thrilling. I love the ease of the EU zone, seamlessly passing through one country to another. Sometimes there are rivers to cross (many rivers to crosssssss.....it's been a vocal road trip) and sometimes a tunnel marks the border, but each and every time we cross over into a new country it feels significant.
These photos are from the road trip we have taken this past week, driving from Italy to Austria, and ducking in and out of Germany. I can't be casual, I think it is so cool that just half an hour out of Salzburg city you are in German countryside!
But I do wish there was a little more fanfare than the subtle blue sign you could miss if you blinked at the wrong time.
Nobody else is jumping up and down in their cars as we pass from through countries, I'm sure it is all very casual in those cars, they've probably done it all their lives. Which I think miss Madeleine may be like!
But we still get so excited. And to be honest, I think we always will.
