A few weeks back I posted about our incredible first Michelin Star experience in Jersey at Ormer, and I mentioned that I would post about the Don Street Deli as well, their kid-sister store next door!
Not surprisingly the Don Street Deli is located on Don Street in St Helier, but what was surprising was how Melbourne it felt!! It was one of the first things we noticed when we moved to the UK, the absence of deli's and how much we missed them. Even now, we get excited by freshly sliced ham and stores that will make things on the spot for you, because it just doesn't happen as freely as it did back home. But anyway, I digress...
We went to the Don Street Deli after our night away from Madeleine (our first night away I might add) and spent the morning leisurely exploring Jersey a bit more and ducking into all sorts of places that I can't easily explore with a pram and active toddler!
The deli is located next door to Ormer, and is owned by same chef, Shaun Rankin. A little bit of a foodies delight, this deli has top quality produce, freshly made everything and a range of gluten free options.
We had already eaten a massive breakfast but couldn't refuse a few small plates, and one large cake! Everything looked incredible, and tasted even better. We started out with the caprese salad. The tomatoes were so fresh they actually tasted like they had been picked from the vine that morning. You know that smell of a tomato vine, well these smelled like that, like real tomatoes!
We then moved on to dessert, having had one portion of vegetables to justify it (ha). Pete had some gluten-heavy pastries (to which I refuse to photograph on principle), and I had the Gluten Free Orange Cake. Capital letters required. Oh my goodness.
I'm pretty certain that the ingredients read a little something like this: butter, orange, sugar and butter. It was ridiculous how good this cake was. You would never suspect for one second it was sans-gluten (possibly because there was no flour at all, just butter) but that's about all the time I had to consider this thought before it was devoured!
The Don Street Deli is the perfect spot to grab a quick lunch (or cake, did I mention they have cake...) if you want to indulge in quality but don't have the time for a 3 course meal next door. I'm kind of disappointed that it has taken me this long to discover, but take comfort in knowing it is going to be my little spot in the Balliwick from now on.
