On December 31 each year we sit around and think about the year that has passed and of what we hope to achieve in the year to come. This year we sat and talked about our intentions for the year, and even had Maddie think about her hopes and 4 year old dreams for the year. We asked Maddie to think of a place she wanted to go (the snow), something she wanted to learn (the piano) and something yummy she wanted to eat (LOTS of ice-cream).
I wanted to make some goals and intentions for Pete and I to be guided by for the year, but knew that a list of resolutions wouldn't stick. It never makes it past February! And so we hopped on the bandwagon of choosing just one word for the year to come. But, we decided it might be a bit fun if we chose each others word. Isnt it always so much easier to give advice to someone else when they are having an issue rather than solve your own personal conundrums, and so with the advantage of perspective and time, we tasked one another with choosing one word for the other person to live to for the year.
I came up with Pete's word in a heartbeat, and I'm sure he won't mind me sharing it. Play. He works hard. Really hard. He travels and works and sleeps. He doesn't get to read a book to his kids at night and carries the hefty weight and responsibility of currently being our primary (gluten-free) bread-winner. But this year, I want him to spend some time focusing on P L A Y. I want him to feel like he can have some time to enjoy himself and carve out time to be free from stress and pressure and just play. Play golf. Play tennis. Play tic tac toe. Play play play. It is my hope and intention for his 2017. Now go forth husband, go play!! And maybe let me play some too!!
When we were talking about what I am hoping to achieve this year, Pete summarised my 2017 intentions with the single word of Start. 2016 was definitely the year of growing our family and focusing on the new normal of life with two children. I was unwell for a lot of the year, as was Lachlan, so I didn't have a lot of time to focus on much else. But, with a better handle on my health, and a strong desire to embrace creative pursuits again, this is the year for me to START. I have Started developing a new brand concept. I am going to Start embracing hobbies that have long ago fallen by the wayside. I am going to Start making more deliberate and proactive choices rather than living in what feels like has been a reactive way for the past few years. This year I will Start focusing on getting some balance back in my life and rather than thinking and planning, I am just going to Start! Ideas, plans, hopes, dreams.... I'm coming for you!
Have you chosen a word for your year? Or are you more disciplined to follow a set of resolutions?
